Spence School Files Plans for 6-Story Upper East Side Expansion
Plans filed by the Spence School call for the construction of a six-story building featuring a gymnasium, squash courts and more facilities.
UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — The Spence School — an all-girls private school on East 91st Street near Madison Avenue — filed plans with the city Department of Buildings to build a six-story expansion about a mile away from the school's main campus.
The plans for a new construction on East 90th Street between 1st and York avenues were filed with the city Friday by the Spence School's director of finances. The new building would rise 83 feet and would contain 51,805 square feet zoned for community use.
The new satellite campus appears to be a combination of an education and athletic facility. Building plans call for the construction of a two-story gymnasium, locker rooms, squash courts, an exercise room and a number of offices. The building will also contain a classroom and greenhouse on its sixth floor, according to the building plans.

The building site is currently occupied by what appears to be a two-story parking garage. The Spence School has not yet filed to demolish the existing structure, according to the Department of Buildings. The new campus will be designed by Rogers Partner Architects, according to building plans.
