UES Churches Selling Buildings In Dual Transactions: Reports

The Church of the Epiphany will expand to Jan Hus Presbyterian Church and sell its current building to NewYork–Presbyterian Hospital.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — An Upper East Side congregation is expanding into a larger, historic church building in the neighborhood and, in turn, selling its current space to an area hospital in duel real estate transactions, according to reports.

The Church of the Epiphany has entered a deal with Jan Hus Presbyterian Church to buy the latter's 19th-century building on East 74th Street between First and Second avenues, Our Town first reported. The Church of the Epiphany, which has been located on York Avenue and East 74th Street since the late 1930s, told the paper that its current building cannot accomodate its need for space.

"Now, we’ll be able to significantly expand our ministry to the neighborhood, and at the same time, we’ll get to save a historic building," Rev. Jennifer Reddall told Our Town.

The sale also meets the needs of Jan Hus Presbyterian Church, which no longer needs the 23,000-square-foot building it has occupied since 1888. The church is currently looking for a new space in the neighborhood where it can continue providing services for vulnerable New Yorkers, Our Town reported.

NewYork–Presbyterian Hospital will buy the building currently owned by the Church of the Epiphany, and is eyeing the lot for a student housing building for its Weill Cornell Medical College, according to reports.

All three institutions signed deals for the dual transactions in November and hope to close in 2019, Our Town reported. The financial details of the deals were not disclosed.
