Demarchelier, Beloved UES French Bistro, To Close After 40 Years
The restaurant is relocating to Greenport, Long Island in 2020. Demarchelier's last meal on the UES will be served Dec. 28.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Upper East Side French restaurant Demarchelier is leaving New York City after four decades in business, 28 at its current East 86th Street and Madison Avenue location, according to a note posted on the business' website.
Demarchelier will serve its last meal on the Upper East Side Dec. 28 and make the move to Greenport, Long Island, according to business owners. The family-owned restaurant cited New York's "rapidly changing" business environment as a reason for the move.
"We have had the pleasure of serving and caring for generations over the years and we appreciate and thank you for your loyal patronage dearly. Many of you have become like family. New York City is rapidly changing and our daughter has chosen to carry on the family tradition at the beach and closer to the surf!" the note on Demarchelier 's website reads.

The bistro is currently run by second-generation owner Emily Demarchelier. The restaurant's decor heavily features the artwork of the restaurant's founder Eric Demarchelier, with pieces for sale hanging on the eatery's walls. Owners wrote that they hope customers make the trek out to Long Island to visit the restaurant when it reopens.
"Since Demarchelier opened in 1978 it has worked to bring a little piece of France to New York City. Every meal that leaves our kitchen expresses the soul of authentic French bistro fair [sic]," the note reads.
