UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — An Upper West Side church has begun developing an adjacent lot into a 14-story apartment tower, the West Side Rag first reported.

Construction has begun on the planned apartment building next to St. Michael's Church on Amsterdam Avenu betweeun West 99th and 100th streets, the West Side Rag reported. A senior warden at the church told the blog that the tower will likely rise 14 stories with a commercial business occupying the ground floor.

"We had hoped to do that, but the project is too small," Michael Smith told the blog. "It just isn’t economically feasible."

Exact details about the new apartment tower are currently unknown. The church previously filed plans to build a 15-story tower rising 264-feet and housing 34 apartment units with the city Department of Buildings, but those plans were never approved, according to city records.
