Billie Holiday's Former Upper West Side Home Sells For $9.5 Million
Jazz legend Billie Holiday lived in the Upper West Side townhouse during the years leading up to her death in 1959.
UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — The Upper West Side home in which jazz legend Billie Holiday spent her last years has sold for more than $9 million, according to public real estate records. A deal on the townhouse located at 26 West 87th Street, located between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue, closed in April, according to records.
The five-story townhouse went for $9.475 million, according to real estate records. The finale sales price represents a steal for its new owners, as the house was put on the market for nearly $13 million in 2015, according to real estate listing site Streeteasy. Most recently the townhouse was asking $9.9 million, according to a listing on Nest Seekers International.
Holiday lived in the home at the time of her death in 1959, according to a New York Times obituary. Holiday died at the age of 44 due to "congestion of the lungs complicated by heart failure," according to the obit.

During her nearly career as a jazz singer — which spanned three decades — Hollday earned the nicknamed "Lady Day," and recorded famous versions of many songs including "Strange Fruit," "God Bless the Child" and "Blue Moon."
The West 87th Street townhouse contains seven bedrooms, six bathrooms and luxury features such as a temperature-controlled walk-in wine room, according to real estate listings. The home is also just a block away from access to Central Park.
