UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A Beaux-Arts building on the Upper West Side that formerly housed classrooms within the St. Agnes Boys High School is now home to one of the most lavish penthouse units on the Upper West Side — and it just hit the market for $42 million.

The two-unit, supersized penthouse at 555 West End, near 87th Street, has 8,400-square-feet of indoor space with six-bedrooms, eight-bathrooms, and another 3,100-square-feet of outdoor room to roam.

Prior to the pandemic, the two top-floor penthouses sold as separate units, but developers have decided to combine the units to take "advantage of the insane demand in the market for bigger homes with outdoor space."

The most unique element of the property, however, is that it's the former longtime home of the St. Agnes Boys High School. The school was sold to developers in 2014 with plans to turn it into the condos we see today.

Elements of the school are still seen in the massive penthouse.

The great room in the unit is actually the former gymnasium of the school, which has 22-foot ceilings with a domed skylight and a wall of windows and French doors that lead to a terrace.

Simply hearing the description of the terrace is goosebump inspiring.

"There is a magnificent 1,520 square foot roof terrace with open city and river views lined with the building’s signature landmarked parapets and turrets and accessed by a wonderful, wide and sweeping outside staircase directly from the wrap terrace, designed to impressively and beautifully connect the terrace spaces," reads the listing for the penthouse.
