'The Simpsons' Star Sues Upper West Side Co-Op, Reports Say

Actor Hank Azaria claims he's being shaken down by his co-op board and a neighbor.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — The voice behind a number of "The Simpsons" characters is suing his Upper West Side co-op board for attempting to shake him down, according to multiple reports.

Hank Azaria, 53, filed a lawsuit Monday accusing the co-op board at 75 Central Park West of refusing to return his $50,000 security deposit, the New York Daily News reported. The posh co-op building's board charged Azaria a $20,000 electrical charge for renovations done to his unit and $10,100 after a neighbor complained that the renovations damaged their apartment, according to the report.

"(The board's) lack of candor or skepticism would be inexplicable, were it not paired with the imagined $20,000 electrical upgrade fee which make the explication all too obvious: this is a shakedown," the lawsuit, which was acquired by the Daily News, reads.

Azaria's neighbor filed a complaint with the co-op board in October 2015 regarding the damage suffered during "The Simpsons" star's renovations, the New York Post reported. Azaria paid the charge despite his contractor's claims that the damage was not caused by the renovation, the Post reported.

Azaria joined the cast of "The Simpsons" in 1989 and has won four Emmys for his voice work on the show. Some of Azaria's most well known characters on the show include Chief Wiggum, Moe and Apu, but he also voices lesser-known characters and many one-time parts.
