Upper West Side's New Tallest Development Revealed
Extell Development unveiled plans Monday for a 775-foot-tall building on West 66th Street.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Extell Development and architecture firm Snøhetta unveiled Monday a planned development that will be the tallest building on the Upper West Side. The mixed-use development will rise on a multi-lot building site at 50 West 66th Street, located between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West, according to a press release from Snøhetta.
The new development will rise 775 feet tall and house 127 condos, real estate publication Curbed first reported. The building will be more than 100 feet taller than 200 Amsterdam Avenue, which before today was the tallest proposed building in the neighborhood. Neighborhood preservation groups and local elected officials have tried to block the 200 Amsterdam Avenue proposal.
The Snøhetta-designed building contains three district sections: a mixed-use base, a body tower and a "crown" at the top of the building. Each is designed to reflect the character and style of the surrounding area, the design firm said in a press release.

"Situated at the heart of the neighborhood’s cultural core, steps from Lincoln Center to the west and Central Park to the east, the building will join the neighborhood, sensitively responding to its context and referencing the area’s architectural character with a natural palette of refined materials," a Snøhetta press release reads.
