45 Crashes Along State Parkways On Long Island: NYS Troopers

Police are advising motorists to stay off the roads, cautioning dangerous conditions, as Long Island officers log 243 crashes on Thursday.

FARMINGDALE, NY — New York State Police responded to 45 crashes — the majority in Nassau County — throughout the state’s parkway system on Long Island during the snowstorm on Thursday.

The statistics were complied between 5 a.m. and 4 p.m., according to the troopers’ public information officer Daniel Ahlgrim. He described the crashes as minor in nature, without any serious injuries.

A breakdown of the statistics with the number of crashes on the state’s parkways systems for both Nassau and Suffolk counties was not immediately available.

Police responded to a total of 243 crashes. Nassau County police responded to 63 crashes between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Suffolk County police responded to 135 crashes between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Crashes snarled the morning commute in areas like Wantagh, Franklin Square and Babylon.

A crash along Wantagh State Parkway near the southbound exit W4 in Wantagh slowed traffic for about an hour during the morning commute. Traffic was also impacted on the Southern State Parkway near Corona Avenue in Franklin Square in the morning. There were five separate crashes in the same area of Sunrise Highway in North Babylon in chain reaction following a two-car crash.

State police are urging motorists to stay off the roadways Thursday through Friday night, Ahlgrim said. Anyone who does have to drive is urged to drive slowly and maintain a safe distance behind the car in front of them on the roadway, he said.
