Coronavirus: Wantagh Schools Suspend Trips, Gatherings

Wantagh schools are taking on some proactive measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

WANTAGH, NY — Wantagh schools are suspending field trips and taking other measures to slow the spread of coronavirus, according to a letter from the district's superintendent, John McNamara.

While there have been no confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the Wantagh Union Free School District, officials are taking precautions. In addition to canceling school trips, officials are postponing all large group gatherings and limiting use of school facilities by outside groups.

"I know that this will cause some significant disappointment for our students and parents that were looking forward to upcoming events, but we have been advised it is an appropriate measure to be taken at this time. These changes will be re-evaluated again at the end of our spring recess and it will be determined if they need to be extended," McNamara said in the letter.

Officials are continuing to disinfect school buildings regularly and use expanded cleaning protocols, and hiring additional workers to get it done.

While there's no current case in the district, that could change. A discovery of a coronavirus case in the district means a 24-hour closing of buildings. "I would ask you to please have contingency plans in place for child care in the event of a school closing," McNamara said.
