Experience Bird, Butterfly Migrations At Jones Beach

The beach is for more than just waves. And Jones Beach has interesting events planned all autumn long.

As autumn continues and the weather starts to get cooler, fewer and fewer people go to the beach. While many are already missing the days in the sun and sand, fewer people at the shore means that nature can reclaim the space. And that creates many opportunities for people who love the outdoors.

Even though beach season is over, there's still plenty to do at Jones Beach through the autumn and into the winter. There are activities for kids, adults and families every weekend. Some of which are unique opportunities to get close to wildlife.

This weekend, on Sept. 3o, the Jones Beach Nature Center is having a Monarch Beach Walk from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Every year, the beautifully colored monarch butterflies migrate south, and Jones Beach is along their route. The walk will be around parts of the beach where the butterflies are known to be found.

Registration is required, but spots are still open. The fee is $4 for adults and children, but children under 3 are free.

For those that like their wildlife a little larger, the Nature Center will be holding a raptor migration hike for adults on Sunday, Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to noon. The hike takes you around the west end of the beach, where the birds of prey are known to perch during their migratory season.
