Hofstra Lacrosse Player Dies After Car Crash

Joe Ferriso died Saturday of injuries sustained in a car accident, university officials said.

Hofstra University student Joseph Ferriso died this weekend being involved in a car crash, university officials confirmed Sunday.

The 19-year-old was a sophomore at the university and a defender on the school’s NCAA Division I lacrosse team.

“Words can not describe the feeling of sorrow and sense of loss our team and the Hofstra Lacrosse family have at this time,” said Hofstra Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach Seth Tierney in a statement Sunday. “Joe was the definition of teammate and if we can not play with him, then we will play for him.”

Before joining the Hofstra Pride, he was a student athlete at Kellenberg Memorial High School and an Eagle Scout. For his Eagle Scout project, he constructed a wooden deck, railing, and stairs at the Youth Council Building in Copiague, according to Lax Lessons.

Ferriso graduated from Kellenberg Memorial High School in 2013 and moved on to Hofstra, where he was majoring in mechanical engineering, according to Lax Lessons.

Visitation is set for Wednesday and Thursday from 2-4:30 p.m. and 7-9:30 p.m. at D’Andrea Brothers Funeral Home in Copiague.

A funeral mass will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Church in Copiague.
