NYAW Awards Two Wantagh High School Students Scholarships
Margaret Gates and Michael Minars Each Receive $3,000 Scholarship to Pursue Their Studies

Wantagh, N.Y. (July 1, 2021)—In partnership with the New York Chapter of the National Association of Water Companies (NAWC-NY), New York American Water recently awarded Margaret Gates and Michael Minars of Wantagh High School each with a $3,000 scholarship to pursue their college education. This is the eleventh year that New York American Water has offered scholarships to high school students within its service area who have the passion and potential to become the future of the water industry.
“We are honored to award both Margaret and Michael with this scholarship in recognition of their commitments and academic successes throughout their high school careers,” said Lynda DiMenna, president of New York American Water. “We wish them the best of luck as they take their next steps towards promising, impactful careers.”
After putting together an impressive resume during her four years at Wantagh High School, Margaret will be attending Cornell University to study mechanical and aerospace engineering. During her high school career, Margaret participated in many extracurricular activities including The New York Academy of Sciences and the Nassau Bowmen Local Archery Club. She also participated in many science-related activities including the Wantagh High School Science Research Program and A Space 4 Space (Girl Scout Gold Award Project), and she was the Science Olympiad President.

Michael graduated Wantagh High School with an impressive resume of academic and extracurricular achievements. He will study environmental studies and sustainable agriculture at Wesleyan University. While attending Wantagh High School, he served as Key Club Co-President, Class of 2021 Secretary and Foreign Language Honor Society Treasurer. He also received academic awards, most notably becoming a member of the National Honor Society, National Science Honor Society and was part of Public Relations for the National English Honor Society.
