Seaford Manor Elementary School Puts Spotlight On Autism

Students wore blue as part of the Autism Awareness Month campaign.

SEAFORD, NY — Students' special abilities were celebrated at Seaford Manor Elementary School to commemorate Autism Awareness Month in April.

Students and staff were recently encouraged to join the Light it Up Blue campaign by wearing the color.

As part of the schoolwide project, every child was given a blank puzzle piece, which is the symbol used to represent the mystery and complexity of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Each student decorated the symbol and wrote one unique quality about herself or himself, the Seaford School District said in a statement.

The colorful pieces were then hung throughout the school.

Students also participated in discussions about qualities that make them special, and teachers showed a digital presentation of "I'm Special, I'm Me!" by Ann Meek and Sarah Massini.
