Students learned about sand, soil and silt, then filled small plastic cups with dirt and planted grass seed. To add a little fun to the project, they put faces on the outside of their cups. Once the grass grew, each cup looked like a person or creature with crazy hair.
Second graders also learned about animal life cycles by hatching butterflies. They kept their caterpillars in small cups on their desks and watched them grow. Then, students got to witness each caterpillar metamorphosize into a chrysalis.

Eventually, they emerged as butterflies within a soft cage. Students cared for the creatures by ensuring the cage had water and a source of nutrition. On a warm sunny day, they released the butterflies into nature.
