Seaford Resident to Town: Restrict Parking at New Retail Plaza

Peter Ruffner writes letter to Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray on new development on Jerusalem Avenue.

The following letter was written to Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray by Seaford resident Peter Ruffner.

Dear Supervisor Murray:

Recently, the Town’s Board of Zoning Appeals imprudently approved construction of a five-store retail building on the southeast corner of Washington Avenue and Jerusalem Avenue in Seaford. That construction is now completed and the owner is endeavoring to lease out his property. In addition, the heavily used Washington Avenue Park is located across the street from this new shopping area.

This is a very congested T-intersection with a number of turning lanes and signals. Furthermore, the N-54 NICE bus needs to navigate this corner as part of its route. Thus, between the congestion, traffic conditions and patterns,  I am requesting that the Town, by appropriate resolution, make both the east side of Washington Avenue between Harland Road and Jerusalem Avenue and the west side of Washington Avenue between Washington Avenue Park and Jerusalem Avenue “No Parking Zones”.

These two areas may already be “No Parking Zones”, but there is no signage indicating such and with the new stores soon to open people will be parking everywhere!  For the record, the Harland Road corner I refer to in the preceding paragraph (across from the entrance to Washington Avenue Park) is a new extended part of the original road with about ten new houses constructed on it over the past few years so that segment of Harland may not have been dedicated to and accepted by the Town yet.

This is a very unsafe area for pedestrians with the sole entrance to Washington Avenue Park within 50 yards of this intersection. This “No Parking Zone” action is necessary for pedestrian and vehicular safety. I would gladly walk this area with you or a Town representative to physically illustrate my personal concerns and the anxiety of many others in the Seaford Manor area.

Thank you for your interest in your Seaford constituents and for addressing a potentially hazardous intersection within the Township.
