Sinkhole Reported in Wantagh

Firefighters handling a propane fire noticed "bubbles and clay and dirt coming up in the middle of the street," according to a report.

A sinkhole was discovered by fire personnel responding to a propane fire in Wantagh Wednesday, according to Newsday.

The 5-square-foot hole on Briar Lane did not collapse, though the aging asphalt cracked and broke, according to the report.

“When you all of a sudden see bubbles and clay and dirt coming up from the middle of the street, that’s usually a problem,” Wantagh FD’s second assistant chief Ken Kelly said, according to the report, adding the fire truck driver first noticed the disturbance and pulled the truck out of danger.

Last year, a water main break apparently caused another sinkhole nearby, located at Barrie and Oakfield Avenues, according to News 12. Witnesses spotted a van that partially fell into the hole, though no injuries were reported.
