Thunderstorm Whips Wantagh, Seaford With 60 MPH Winds
Thunderstorms rolled over Wantagh around 9:15 p.m., packing heavy rains and wind. Large downed branches were reported.
WANTAGH, NY — A powerful thunderstorm brought heavy rains and wind gusts to Wantagh on Thursday night, downing trees and leaving more than 1,000 homes and businesses without power.
Packing winds of up to 61 MPH, the storm rolled over the hamlet around 9:15 p.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service reported. Large branches were downed and a toppled tree fell on Wantagh State Parkway.
Twitter users reported power outages in the area, including on Beech Street, Brooktree Lane and Wantagh Avenue. Lights flickered in Seaford as well, with some flash flooding reported.

Around 41,000 PSEG Long Island customers in all lost power overnight, the company said. As of 7 a.m. Friday, about 25,000 people were still without power, mostly in Suffolk County.
That included a few hundred customers in the Wantagh-Seaford area.

"Crews have been deployed and are assessing damages and will begin restoration efforts," the utility said. "As we continue to assess the damage, restoration times will be refined."
PSEG said it is also calling in additional workers, including tree and line crews, to repair damage and restore outages.
