Wantagh, Seaford Power Outages: Strong Winds Leave Homes In Dark

Strong winds whipped Long Island on Friday, leaving thousands in Nassau County without power.

WANTAGH, NY — Strong winds whipped Long Island on Friday, knocking down trees and leaving thousands in the dark across Nassau County. About 4,100 Nassau homes and businesses were left in the dark as of 4 p.m. Friday, according to PowerOutage.Us.

Multiple outages in the Wantagh and Seaford area left more than 100 PSEG Long Island customers without power, the utility reported in its outage map. That includes dozens of customers on and around Tardy Lane North and Trellis Lane. Many residents were expected to see power restored around late Friday or early Saturday.

The utility said it was prepared for the strong winds, noting the arriving storm was expected to bring light rain and wind gusts as high as 65 mph.

"We are closely monitoring this weather system and our crews are ready to respond safely and as quickly as possible to any service interruptions," John O'Connell, vice president of transmission and distribution, said in a statement. "The gusty winds pose a risk to trees, particularly when the ground is saturated after several days of rain, and falling trees can bring down wires."

Over the last six years, PSEG LI has tried to make its electric infrastructure more resilient to extreme weather. This includes through storm hardening upgrades and ongoing tree maintenance.
