Wantagh Students Awarded For Their Writing Skills

Madeline Rose took first-place and a $200 check, while seven other students earned an honorable mention.

WANTAGH, NY — Several students at Wantagh High School were recognized for their creative writing. Madeline Rose was one of three first-place winners of the Irish Cultural Society's annual Martin J. Kelly writing contest, according to a news release.

Rose won $200 for her efforts.

Seven other Wantagh students — Amanda Combs, Julia Froese, Sean Hill-Hotz, Sierra Kenny, Andrianna Oronges, Kevin Pfundstein and Tyler Spisto — received honorable mention awards and each took home $25.

This year's contest asked students to focus on composing an essay based on identifying through references to the things which people accumulate from their heritage or interests, including religious symbols, foods and languages. Participants based their writing on Timothy Egan’s "The Immortal Irishman."

The contest is named for Martin J. Kelly, a founding member of the Irish Cultural Society and its past president for 23 years.
