Winter Storm Watch Issued For Nassau County

BREAKING: Snow total estimates continue to rise as a major winter storm approaches. Prepare now, the National Weather Service says.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch, in effect from 1 a.m. until midnight Thursday, for Nassau County.

A total of 4-8 inches of snow is now expected to accumulate in Nassau. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph will cause areas of blowing and drifting snow.

"Plan on difficult travel conditions, including during the morning commute on Thursday," the winter storm watch says.

The full forecast:

Wednesday- Sunny, with a high near 29. Wind chill values between 10 and 20. South wind 5 to 9 mph.

Wednesday Night- Snow, mainly after midnight. Steady temperature around 26. Wind chill values between 15 and 25. Light and variable wind becoming north 12 to 17 mph in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Thursday- Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Areas of blowing snow. Steady temperature around 25. Wind chill values between 10 and 15. Windy, with a north wind 21 to 28 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches possible.

Thursday Night- A 50 percent chance of snow, mainly before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 10. Wind chill values between -5 and 5. Blustery, with a northwest wind 20 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 39 mph.

Friday- Mostly sunny and cold, with a high near 13. Breezy, with a west wind 20 to 22 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph.

Friday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 2. Breezy.

Saturday- Mostly sunny and cold, with a high near 11.
