Inwood Named Most Affordable Neighborhood In Manhattan: Study

The Upper Manhattan neighborhood is the only one in the borough with a median rent under $2,000, according to StreetEasy.

INWOOD, NY — When it comes to Manhattan real estate, affordable isn't the first word you think of. However, a study was recently released with the six cheapest neighborhoods in the borough.

Out of the six most affordable neighborhoods in Manhattan, Inwood had the lowest median rent of them all, according to the real estate website StreetEasy.

  • Median Rent: $1,850
  • "You can't talk about affordable Manhattan neighborhoods without including Inwood," the authors of the study wrote. "Up here, Broadway and bigger streets are lined with a surprising diversity of businesses: some chain stores, countless local shops of all stripes, and restaurants and taverns that give Inwood a nightlife scene all its own."
  • The report also mentions Inwood Hill Park, Dyckman Farmhouse, the Inwood arch, and the Met Cloisters as neighborhood attractions.

Inwood was the most affordable Manhattan neighborhood, but other uptown areas also made the list.

  • 6. Murray Hill: $2,700 median rent
  • 5. Yorkville: $2,450 median rent
  • 4. Hamilton Heights: $2,278 median rent
  • 3. East Harlem: $2,100 median rent
  • 2. Washington Heights: $2,021 median rent
  • 1. Inwood: $1,850 median rent

Overall in Manhattan, the median asking rent dropped last year from $3,500 as of January 2020 to $2,781 in December 2020.
