Seven Uptown Landlords Land On 'NYC's Worst Evictor' List: Study
Landlords who evicted dozens of people in Washington Heights and Inwood are in the top 20 "worst evictors" in New York City, advocates say.

UPTOWN, MANHATTAN —Several Washington Heights and Inwood landlords are among the "worst evictors" in New York City, a new study found.
Seven landlords who have buildings in the two Uptown neighborhoods landed on The Right to Counsel NYC Coalition's annual list of New York City's worst evictors, which ranked the 20 landlords who evicted the most tenants across the city in 2019.
Of those seven, four landlords were in the list's top 10. All but one of the seven had also been on the coalition's 2018 list.

The worst offender specifically in Washington Heights and Inwood in 2019 was Larry Gluck, who evicted 16 families in eight Uptown buildings in 2019. Gluck landed seventh on the list for his 79 evictions in properties across the city.
Not far behind were three landlords grouped together from A&E Real Estate, who evicted nine families in six buildings across the Uptown neighborhoods that year.

"Many tenants...say that this landlord is often unresponsive, neglectful, and rude, and gives preferential treatment to new tenants and their apartments as compared to tenants who have lived in the building longer," the Coalition wrote about the A&E landlords, who landed ninth on the list.
This year, the worst evictor list is part of housing advocates push for New York's elected officials to meet six demands that they say will help tenants facing mass evictions when Gov. Andrew Cuomo's eviction moratorium ends on June 20.
About 50,000 new eviction cases are predicted to be filed after the moratorium lifts on June 20 and, most likely in communities of color, according to the Coalition.
Here are the Uptown landlords that landed in the top 10:
#6. Jonathan Wiener, Chestnut Holdings: 83 total Evictions, one of which was Uptown Manhattan
#7. Larry Gluck, Stellar Management: 79 total evictions, 16 of which were Uptown Manhattan
#9. Douglas Eisenberg, Donald Hastings, Maggie McCormick; A&E Real Estate: 75 total evictions, nine of which were in Uptown Manhattan
#10 Mark Engel, Langsam Property Services Corp: 71 evictions, two of which were in Uptown Manhattan
None of the four landlords immediately responded to requests for comment.
