Bellone Thanks Soldiers in Afghanistan for Virtual Run to Support Suffolk Marathon

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone congratulated the more than 240 service members, contractors and others who completed a virtual 5k race Saturday at Bagram Air Base in support of the CHS Suffolk County Marathon, Half Marathon and 5k.
Thousands of runners will be running in the Suffolk race on Sunday, Oct. 30 in Patchogue to raise funds for veterans in Suffolk County.
“It’s exciting to see these soldiers and others supporting those who came before them in serving their country and protecting our way of life,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “Their support is such a strong statement about the value of those who have served in the military and strengthens our commitment to taking care of our own veterans.”
The “ghost run” was developed by Ron Hurtado, Suffolk County resident and founder of the Airborne Tri-Team, which provides recreational services to veterans. A virtual run allows runners to complete a race at a time and place of their choosing if they are unable to participate in the actual race.

Among the participants in the Bagram Run were runners from the Czech Republic, Air Force, Army, civilian contractors, and third-country nationals.
Last year’s race raised about $160,000 that was distributed to 19 organizations serving Suffolk veterans.
The Suffolk race will be followed by the Freedom Fest, featuring bands, including some made up entirely of veterans, and food, wines and beers produced here on Long Island.
