Boater Rescued After Vessel Capsizes Off Hampton Bays

The boater was sitting on top of a capsized vessel in the Shinnecock Bay, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation says.

HAMPTON BAYS, NY — A mariner whose vessel capsized off the coast of Hampton Bays was rescued recently, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said.

According to the DEC, on June 10, while checking anglers in Hampton Bays, a DEC environmental conservation police officer heard reports on the police scanner that a vessel had capsized near a local waterfront restaurant.

The dispatcher said that the operator of the vessel was stranded, sitting on top of the capsized boat in Shinnecock Bay, the DEC said.

The ECO radioed the Southampton Town bay constable and offered his help in rescuing the man, the DEC said.

"Despite windy conditions, rough seas, and shallow water, the bay constable was able to navigate their vessel close enough so the ECO could grab the stranded boater and bring him safely to shore. The boater was not injured," the DEC said.
