Motorist Spots Man Burglarizing Hampton Bays Business: Police

Items worth $7,500 were recovered, police say.

HAMPTON BAYS, NY — A passing motorist thwarted a burglary in Hampton Bays early Monday, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police, the incident took place at 2:17 a.m. when a driver told police that she had seen someone enter business on Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays. Police went to the location and saw a man fleeing the building and heading east; he was found urinating nearby, authorities said.

Alejandro Arturo Reyes-Gonzales, 25, of Hampton Bays, was arrested and charged with third-degree burglary, a felony; third-degree grand larceny, a felony; third-degree criminal mischief, a felony; two counts of fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a misdemeanor; false personation, a misdemeanor; and urinating in public, a violation, police said. Reyes-Gonzales was also found to be in possession of stolen property from a Jan. 31 burglary at the same location, police said.

The incident marks the second time in the past month that the business was burglarized; several items were recovered worth $7,500, police said.
