Residents Vote Down Quogue Village Incorporation

A total of 642 voters cast a ballot for incorporation, while 889 voters rejected the proposal.

QUOGUE, NY — Voters have nixed the idea of proposed village incorporation for East Quogue.

Residents turned out on Thursday to weigh in on the issue. A total of 1,531 votes were cast at an incorporation election held at the East Quogue Elementary School to determine whether certain territory within the Town of Southampton should be incorporated as a village to be known as the Village of East Quogue.

At 9 p.m., when the polls closed, election inspector and Town Clerk Sundy Schermeyer announced the results: The proposal for incorporation was voted down, with 642 voters casting a ballot for incorporation, and 889 voters casting a ballot against.

According to village law, no further incorporation proceedings involving the same territory can be commenced for one year.

The certificate of election was filed in the town clerk’s office at 9:15 a.m. on Friday morning, October 18, town officials said. According to village law, a person qualified to vote at the election may institute a proceeding to determine the validity or regularity of such election before the Suffolk County Supreme Court within the next 10 days.
