The Westchester district attorney's office said the crime is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

WHITE PLAINS, NY — An Asian American grandmother was attacked Tuesday while walking on a sidewalk in White Plains.

Nancy Toh, 83, was out collecting bottles and cans for money, and around 7:30 p.m. outside of the Westchester Mall, a man came up to her, spit in her face and then punched her in the nose, WABC 7 reported.

After one day, Toh called the police and a homeless man — Glenmore Nembherd, 40 — was charged with felony assault.

"Attacks like this one impact all of us," she said. "They create an atmosphere of fear and intimidation that keeps us from feeling safe and secure in our homes and communities.

“I urge everyone to report all hate crimes and bias incidents, even if you are not the victim, so that law enforcement can track and work to prevent these terrible acts,” Rocah said.
