DA: NYC Shooting Suspect is From White Plains

A White Plains man has been accused of opening fire on a crowd in Harlem's Rucker Park during a basketball tournament this summer, injuring five people.

Ricardo Laing, 24, of White Plains, was indicted in August and is charged with 26 felony counts including five counts of second-degree attempted murder, according to a statement from New York County District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.

Five people were injured during the July 25 shooting, which took place during the annual Entertainers Basketball Tournament in the park. Laing is accused of firing a semi-automatic handgun at the crowd following a dispute during one of the games.

One of the victims was shot in the chest and now has limited mobility and has lost sensation in one of his arms, Vance said in a statement.

“The defendant is charged with turning an annual summer event into one now remembered for senseless gun violence,” Vance said in a statement. “New Yorkers should be able to play sports and attend local events without the fear of getting shot. In addition to prosecutions like this, my office is working with communities to get illegal guns off the street.”

Charges against Laing include:

  • Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, a class B felony, 5 counts
  • Assault in the First Degree, a class B felony, 9 counts
  • Assault in the Second Degree, a class D felony, 9 counts
  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a class C felony, 2 counts
  • Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree, a class D felony, 1 count
