Former White Plains Mayor Del Vecchio Dies At 95

He oversaw the revitalization of the city's downtown.

WHITE PLAINS, NY — Former White Plains Mayor Alfred Del Vecchio died Tuesday at the age of 95. He was mayor from 1976 to 1993.

Through his efforts, downtown White Plains saw the construction of the Galleria mall and the Westchester County Courthouse.

White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach credited Del Vecchio with the modernization of land use regulation for the city.

He said he was an early advocate for the use of energy efficient technology and during his administration the city first tested and utilized environmentally friendly alternative fuel vehicles.

"We send our condolences to the Del Vecchio family and our gratitude for the years of dedicated service Mayor Del Vecchio gave to our city," Roach said.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer said the county mourns the passing of the former White Plains mayor.

"Mayor Del Vecchio served the city he loved for many years and helped to shape White Plains into the city that it is today. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time,” he said.
