Red-Light Cameras Go Live In White Plains

A warning period is in effect during which no fines will be levied.

WHITE PLAINS, NY — Driving through White Plains? Well, a new public safety program began Tuesday with the goal of deterring people who run red lights. A warning period of 30 days is now in effect during which warning notices will be issued to the vehicle’s registered owner.

City officials said there will be no fine associated with the warning notice, but at the end of the warning period, notices of liability will be issued to the violators.

The notice carries a fine of $50, but does not result in any points being added to one’s drivers license.

The traffic safety cameras will monitor the following intersections:

  • Southbound Mamaroneck Avenue at Bryant Avenue
  • Eastbound Main Street at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
  • Northbound Bank Street at Hamilton Avenue
  • Westbound Hamilton Avenue at Bank Street
  • Westbound Westchester Avenue at South Kensico Avenue
  • Southbound North Broadway at Hamilton Avenue

The warning period will give residents an opportunity to become familiar with the system, encourage people to slow down and come to a full stop on red, city officials said.

Cameras will operate 24 hours a day and capture images of every vehicle running a red light at the designated intersections.

Warning signs alerting drivers to the intersection safety cameras were installed prior to the warning period.

White Plains joins Yonkers, Mount Vernon and New Rochelle in having red light cameras installed at select intersections.
