WHITE PLAINS, NY — Westchester County is getting ready to reopen beaches, pools and even Playland Park.

County Executive George Latimer said Monday at a news briefing that the beaches at Playland and Croton Point will open for weekends only beginning Memorial Day weekend. The weekend-only schedule will last through June.

Following the last weekend in June, Playland beach will be open seven days a week, and Croton Point will be open Wednesday through Sunday.

Whether or not the control of Glen Island Park will be turned back over to the county from the state, which is still operating a coronavirus testing facility, could be known in the next two to three weeks, Latimer said.

He said the county's pools, with the exception of Playland's pool, will open seven days a week beginning June 25 through the summer. The pool at Playland will be closed for construction through the entire summer.

Latimer said coronavirus protocols will be in effect at all county beaches and pools.

Playland Park will reopen June 26 and operate through Labor Day weekend. It will be open Wednesday through Sunday as well as Monday, July 5 and Monday, Sept. 6.

Latimer also said that disc golf, which was added to the county parks department budget for 2020, will not be considered for Saxon Woods.

He explained that an examination of a design proposal determined the park would not be a good location for the recreational activity.

The county will look at other areas to see where the sport might be appropriate, Latimer said.

Coronavirus Numbers

The number of coronavirus infections continues to decrease in Westchester County.

County Executive George Latimer said Monday there were 4,110 active infections as of numbers released Monday.

A week ago the number of infections was more than 5,000, he said.

"We are back to seeing a steady decline in infections," Latimer said.

The total number of coronavirus infections since the beginning of the pandemic is now 125,913.

Hospitalizations for COVID-19-related illnesses are down as well. There were 150 hospitalizations as of Saturday. One week ago there were 192; two weeks, 238. At the peak in mid-January, there were almost 600.

Twelve people died over the past week, bringing the last number of fatalities to 2,246.

Latimer said he was encouraged by the number of vaccinations in the county.

Thirty-two percent of the county's population have been fully vaccinated. An additional 14 percent have received at least one dose of a vaccine.

Latimer said that more than 288,000 vaccinations have been administered in the major county locations, such as the Westchester County Center, the Yonkers Armory and the two county clinics. That number does not count the various satellite or pharmacy locations.
