White Plains School District Voters Guide

WHITE PLAINS, NY — New York residents are asked to vote on their local school district's budget and board of education by mail this year because of the new coronavirus pandemic. New York's 700 districts ordered absentee ballots and envelopes for every registered voter.

That meant that problems such as the paper shortage plaguing communities during the beginning of the pandemic became problems for the districts.

Under Gov. Andrew Cuomo's executive order, ballots must be returned to the District Clerk by 5 p.m. June 9 though some political officials are trying to have the deadline extended.

There are two candidates running for two Board of Education positions: They are incumbents Rosemarie Eller and Randy Stein. School trustees serve three year terms and are unpaid.

School budget

• Proposed for 2020-21: $233,244,050
• Increase over current spending: 2.04 percent
• Tax levy increase: 2.91 percent
• Proposition: Shall the Board of Education of the White Plains City School District be authorized to expend a total amount not to exceed $10,000,000.00, which sum will consist of (a) the balance of the funds held in the Capital Reserve Fund established through the Annual Meeting and Election held on May 17, 2016 plus any interest earned on such balance until fully expended and (b) the remainder of the funds to be expended from Capital Reserve Fund established through the Annual Meeting and Election held on May 21 2019, which will be an amount that will not exceed $540,000.00.

If not mailed, ballots can be dropped off at Education House, 5 Homeside Lane in White Plains, during business hours of 8:30 a.m to 4:30 p.m. up until 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 9.
