Woman Indicted For Trying To Kill 2-Year-Old Son

Police said she tried to drown her son in a bathtub.

WHITE PLAINS, NY — A woman who lives at a White Plains shelter was charged with trying to drown her child. Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino Jr. said Tuesday La'Quanaya Ward, 29, of White Plains, was indicated by a county grand jury on charges related to the attempted drowning of a child at the Coachman Family Center in White Plains Dec. 3.

Ward was arraigned on the following charges:

  • Second-degree attempted murder, a felony
  • First-degree unlawful imprisonment, a felony
  • Third-degree attempted assault, a misdemeanor
  • Endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor

Bail was set at $500,000. Ward's next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 28.

Prosecutors said Ward tried to drown her 2-year-old son in a bathtub and endangered her other infant son before being stopped by another resident.

Westchester County police responded to the Coachman Family Center, a county facility, following a report of the incident by other residents.

After an investigation, Ward was arrested Dec. 11.
