GREENPOINT, BROOKLYN — At first glance, the new bar at 158 Green Street might look like your typical cocktail lounge hangout, a list of carefully crafted $13 mixed drinks with ingredients like elderflower tonic and orange bitters taking up most of its menu.

But, as owners will happily tell you, this bar is different than most New York City watering holes — it's alcohol free.

Getaway opened last month hoping to bring a social, classy option for a night out night out, but without the booze, co-founder Sam Thonis told The Brooklyn Paper. The bar offers a range of non-alcoholic drinks, whether it be for longtime sober customers or those just looking for a break, Thonis said.

“A lot of people come because it’s new and interesting, but on the other hand, a lot of people have told us that they’re sober, and they’ve been looking for a place like this,” he told the Paper.

Thonis, along with co-founder Regina Dellea, opened the bar after noticing a lack of options in the city for people, like his brother, who quit drinking.

Their menu includes the original list of mixed drinks, along with sodas, coffee, tea and a selection of "shrubs," or slightly acidic cordials made from vinegar, fruit and club soda, according to the menu. Owners say they ensure that each ingredient is carefully chosen to make sure it has zero percent alcohol by volume.

"We believe everyone should consume what works best for their personal lifestyle, and we hope to provide new and exciting options for you to explore," their website reads.

The bar will soon also include snacks, according to its website. It joins a small group of alcohol-free establishments, like the Canticles Sober Lounge in Bed-Stuy and monthly pop-up Listen Bar that are spearheading the trend to creating sober hangout spots, the Paper reports.
