Brooklyn Crash Victim to Be Honored With Art Show

Victoria Nicodemus, 30, an art curator in Brooklyn Heights, was killed by an out-of-control SUV while Christmas shopping in Fort Greene.

FORT GREENE, BROOKLYN — The young Brooklyn Heights art curator killed by an SUV earlier this month while Christmas shopping with her boyfriend in Fort Greene will be honored next Tuesday with an outdoor art installation at Fulton Street and South Portland Avenue, the same intersection where she was killed.

Nicodemus died almost instantly when an allegedly unlicensed driver, identified as 39-year-old Brownsville resident Marlon Sewell, veered his Chevy SUV onto the sidewalk to avoid hitting a vehicle in front of him.

The combination vigil and art show in honor of Nicodemus is being curated by artist Mark Samsonovich in collaboration with Indiewalls, where the victim worked, and Transportation Alternatives, a nonprofit advocating for safer NYC streets.

The nonprofit has claimed that Nicodemus was the 20th person to be killed this year by an out-of-control driver careening onto a sidewalk.

Nicodemus’ older brother, Hank Miller, told the New York Times that his sister was “a creative whirlwind and mastermind.”

Miller said Nicodemus was especially inspired by the holiday season. “Most families are happy with simple decoration; she always went more extravagant and beautiful and artful,” he said.

The public art show in memory of Nicodemus will begin Tuesday, Dec. 22, at 6:30 p.m.

“Join us to experience the art Victoria loved,” New York City Councilmember Laurie Cumbo wrote on her Facebook page. “Together we can make a safer city.”
