BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN — Tax returns suck. Cocktails rule. So this year, to make the tax-return-filing experience a tad less excruciating, consider delegating your dirty work to 28-year-old Brooklyn accountant Shane Mason, who has set up shop for 2016’s tax season at a candelit booth inside Bushwick cocktail bar Yours Sincerely.
Mason’s rates begin at $135 and go up from there, depending on the complexity of your financial situation.
But there’s a major perk. “That includes a free cocktail,” Mason told Patch by phone Tuesday.
He recommended the bar’s ”Transmit the Box,” made with chipotle-infused mezcal.
“A bitter drink for a bitter day,” he said.
You’ll have to act fast to land one of Mason’s hour-long appointment slots on Sunday between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., and Monday and Tuesday between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
”I’m booked up for most of February,” Mason said. “I might have to open up new days.”
Mason, a certified personal accountant and financial planner with more than five years’ experience, will end his residency at Yours Sincerely on April 18 — aka, Tax Day.
He said his services have paid off for the majority of his in-bar clients. ”Most people have gotten refunds so far,” he said.
His host bar has also benefited from the influx of customers, most of whom order another drink (or two), according to the local accountant.
“I needed an office; they needed people in the bar,” he said. ”Now they’re getting people from all over Brooklyn and some from Manhattan.”
“I know hundreds of accountants in 10, 20 states, and I haven’t heard of anybody doing this,” Mason said.
However, he believes boozy tax filing could become a trend for the 2017 season.
