Enids Bar In Greenpoint to Close After 20 Years

The Manhattan Avenue staple will have its last day on March 31.

GREENPOINT, BROOKLYN — The corner of Manhattan and Driggs Avenue will soon look different than it has in decades. Longtime bar Enid's has announced that it will close its doors after 20 years in at the Greenpoint spot.

The comfort-food eatery across from McCarren Park announced on its Instagram page last week that it will be closing up shop on March 31.

"Thank you for being here with us for the last 20 years," the business wrote. "We couldn't have done it without you. We've made so many friends, have so many stories to tell and it has been our pleasure."

Manager Andy Siebert told Gothamist that the owners decided it was time to close and "make some room for new pioneers." The closing wasn't because of the usual rent increases or other reasons, but because it was time to move on, Siebert said.

"I know the neighborhood will be devastated, but we are ready for it too," he said. "I feel like we've served our purpose in the neighborhood. It's time to do something else."

Most employees have been with the bar for over a decade of its 20 years, said Siebert, who has worked there for 11 years.

Longtime bargoers shared their reactions online, calling the bar an institution and saying its closure would mark the "end of an era."

"You guys were my first 'favorite bar' and I spent so many wonderful evenings there making new friends and keeping up with old," Instagram user Ed Droste commented. "Much much love and gratitude."

The bar used its Instagram post to reflect on some memories, and encourage patrons to come make new ones in their upcoming last two months.

"Have a kid (better change the laws of biology quick) & bring them in for their first lemon slice," the post joked. "Teach them how to talk and say 'I love those Enids pickles' or 'I'll have two beers' (actually happened)."

The post also recalled dancing all night on Fridays, having mimosas at a Saturday brunch, coming in before and after work for happy hour drinks and enjoying pancakes, bacon and bloody Marys.

"You don't have to remember how you got home..." the post ended. "But we hope you remember you were here. We will!!"
