Local Legend: Thorgy Thor Plays Violin On Her Greenpoint Rooftop

This week's Local Legend is the drag artist and musician Thorgy Thor, who's here to tell us what she loves about Greenpoint.

GREENPOINT, BROOKLYN — Have you ever heard a strain of violin music in the night air while walking through the streets of Greenpoint? Yeah, that's probably Thorgy Thor.

Thorgy became a worldwide celebrity as the classically trained violist and Brooklyn-representing drag queen who debuted on Season 8 of "RuPaul's Drag Race" in 2016, but her career has since taken her above and beyond reality television (not that we're in any away belittling that most sickening of shows!) Anyway ...

The Brooklyn queen's comedic timing, quick wit and prowess with a bow have earned her appearances on television screens and stages across the continent.

Thorgy and the Thorchestra, the queen's eponymous quartet, have performed with the symphony orchestras of Pittsburgh, Vancouver, Nova Scotia, Thunder Bay and Charlotte. Thorgy and her violin recently made an appearance on "Mozart and the Jungle," and she co-stars in "Drag Me Down the Aisle," where she provides support and confidence to soon-to-be brides.

Patch spoke with this extravaganza of a drag star about making music in Greenpoint as part of our Local Legends series, where people who make New York City great discuss the neighborhoods they call home.

Last week, we talked to Queens superhero "Diner Man," known in real life as the preservationist Michael Perlman, and next week we'll explore Park Slope with Senator Chuck Schumer.

Here's what Thorgy had to say about the Brooklyn neighborhood she calls home.

Describe Greenpoint in three words.

Home is Greenpoint, Brooklyn for Me. I've been a New Yorker My WHOLE LIFE. Grew up on Long Island, then I've hopped around Brooklyn apartments until I found this one. But nine years later, I'm still here in Greenpoint and I love it!

[This is] hard for me since I never stop talking.... Foody. Ever-changing. Hip.

Obligatory food question! What local food do you crave and where do you find it?

Good question! There are always new places popping up here every for REAL! But I'd have to say Lobster Joint, which is just across the street. They have an award-winning Bloody Mary and my mouth waters for their lobster mac and cheese!

How does your neighborhood inspire your drag and your music?

Well, I moved here specifically because it was quiet. I work a lot in Williamsburg and Bushwick when I am home, but I don't like the noise of 24/7 parties. It's a nice place to craft and live.

I LOVE my rooftop for filming and photo shoots. I've utilized that roof for years by painting backdrops and filming short scenes playing violin and annoying the neighbors.

Describe the perfect day in your neighborhood.

I love to stroll down Franklin Avenue and take a turn right by the waterfront to get a crisp glass of white wine. No day is complete without stopping by local salvage/vintage shops to find buried treasure, and the food options are endless!

Will Thorgy and the Thorchestra ever perform in New York City? Or, where and when can we come clap for you next?

I just recently debuted a brand new Thorgy and the Thorchestra show at Gramercy Theater in NYC. And I'm planning on bringing it back for a longer run in the near future. Probably a smaller theater with more dates in a row, so everyone can pick and choose which date to put their butts in the seats!

I'm also proud to announce some MAJOR collaborations and guests who are interested in singing alongside a live orchestra, so stay tuned.
