Missed Connection Stood Up By Yellow-Shod Man on Valentine's Day

Devin Custalow waited in vain for the yellow-shod man she hoped would come find her in front of her Williamsburg mural on Valentine's Day.

WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN — Devin Custalow waited in front of her big, blue mural, hoping a potential soulmate in yellow shoes would come find her Valentine's Day, but he didn't show.

Custalow, 25, stood in the cold for 15 minutes on the corner of Wythe Avenue and North 10th Street as more than 1,000 Facebook viewers and a crowd of people watched to see if the man she lost on the G Train would come to claim her.

But when no yellow-shod man appeared, a friend burst out of the crowd with a bouquet of flowers and hug for the woman who did just about everything she could to find her Missed Connection.

"It wasn't meant to be," read a message at the end of the live-stream video. "But there are plenty of yellow shoes in the sea."

Custalow, of Clinton Hill, had hoped her 20-foot mural capture the attention of a stranger with dark shaggy hair and yellow shoes that she met on the G train on her way home from Coney Island in October.

Custalow and the man got separated in a crowded subway, and the last saw the man looking around a shuttle bus, she believes, for her.

Custalow, who works with a New York City media agency, did what any self-respecting Brooklyn millennial would; she took her campaign to social media.

She wrote a Missed Connections Craigslist ad, which was later made into a big blue mural, and took to Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to ask the yellow-shod man to meet her on Valentine's Day.

Then, at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Custalow waited in front of her mural, hoping that he would meet her and that he didn't have a girlfriend.

In an interview before Valentines Day, Custalow said she would be sad if the G train stranger never appeared, but glad that she did what she could to find him.

"If he doesn’t show up, it’s not meant to be," she said. "I’ve just been so excited being a part of this."
