North Brooklyn Gardeners: Help Fix Up Greenpoint's Transmitter Park This Saturday
Gardening amateurs and veterans are invited to a free gardening and wildlife education session to help spruce up WNYC Transmitter Park.

GREENPOINT, BROOKLYN — The Greenpoint Parks Community Stewardship Program is hosting a wildlife education and gardening event this Saturday on the North Brooklyn riverfront.
The free event will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at WNYC Transmitter Park, near Greenpoint Avenue and West Street. Organizers are recommending that attendees wear clothes that can be dirtied while helping care for the garden space within the park.
Gloves and tools will be provided, according to organizers, along with free coffee and snacks for volunteers.

The number (and variety) of birds visiting the park's greenery has only continued to grow since its 2012 opening — and this is a great chance to learn more about them.
The event is funded by the Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund (also known as GCEF), a collaboration between the state's Office of the Attorney General and Department of Environmental Conservation.

GCEF was established using the money from a multimillion dollar settlement with ExxonMobil over the company's infamous oil spill in Greenpoint. The purpose of the fund is to improve Greenpoint's natural environment. And that's working out pretty well: By matching donations from grantees, GCEF has invested $54 million into 46 local projects to date.
