North Brooklyn Suffers From Chronic Mail Mis-Deliveries, Pols Say

Elected officials are asking for an audit of North BK's mail service after everything from tax returns to passports have been lost.

WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN — Anyone who has lost an important piece of mail in North Brooklyn isn't alone, elected officials revealed this week.

Assembly Member Joseph Lentol has called for an audit of the United States Postal Service's deliveries to three North Brooklyn area codes after he said his office has gotten repeated complaints about the problem in the area. The area's national representatives have also signed on to the effort.

Lentol's office told Patch that everything from banks statements to passports and paychecks have gone missing or is not delivered in a timely manner.

The office didn't reveal exactly how many complaints came in, but said that there was enough residents repeating the same problems that the neighborhoods are "suffering from chronic mail mis-deliveries."

"Inadequate mail delivery in North Brooklyn leaves its residents without the ability to send and receive mail in a timely manner," Lentol said. "I join my colleagues in government in calling on the United States Postal Service Inspector General to conduct a thorough review of mail services in North Brooklyn to ensure its residents are properly receiving mail."

The mail audit would look into how U.S. mail is delivered to 11211 and 11249 in Williamsburg 11222 in Greenpoint. Lentol's letter was sent United States Postal Service Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz.

U.S. senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and U.S. representatives Carolyn Maloney and Nydia Velázquez also signed on to the request.

“New Yorkers deserve better than the inadequate mail delivery service that many Brooklyn residents in Williamsburg, East Williamsburg and Greenpoint are experiencing right now," Schumer said. "Not only are these problems, including missing and late mail delivery, an inconvenience to residents, but they could pose real problems for people awaiting critical and time-sensitive personal and professional mail."

The elected officials said that the audit will help determine where the problems with the mail service lie. The missed and late deliveries will likely only get worse if it is not completed, they said.
