WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN — One of the oldest public markets in the borough will get a $2.7 million makeover and add a long list of new events, including cooking classes and seasonal pop-ups, to its arsenal, the city announced Tuesday.

The Moore Street Market, found in a 15,000-square-foot space at 110 Moore Street on the border of East Williamsburg, will get $2 million from the City Council and $700,000 from the Brooklyn Borough President's Office. The money will bring a new roof, street-level windows and updates to the market's heating and cooling systems.

Officials said the updates will help preserve the market and its 15 vendors, which have become a beloved part of the community in its more than seven decades serving Brooklynites.

“Moore Street Market has long been a hub for local and immigrant businesses, and a beacon of opportunity for people living in East Williamsburg and beyond,” Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams said. “With this capital funding...we are making long-term investments in the vitality of a true neighborhood amenity."

Adams was joined by the city's Economic Development Corporation, which oversees the public market, Council Member Antonio Reynoso and several community organizations that will support the market's makeover.

One of those organizations, El Puente, will partner with Moore Street Market to bring a new list of programs to go with its new facilities.

El Puente will create weekly and monthly cooking classes, sewing seminars, reading workshops and pop-up or seasonal events. The Williamsburg nonprofit will also design and install a new market mural and oversee marketing and promotion for Moore Street Market.

“El Puente remains committed to cultivating resources for the Market so that it continues to serve its mission in promoting local businesses that are the backbone of our community and be a cultural hub that not only celebrates our Latino culture, but aims to continue bridging all cultural practices of Williamsburg's diverse population,” Dr. Frances Lucerna, co-founder and executive director of El Puente, said.
