Shea Stadium Closes For Foreseeable Future

The East Williamsburg DIY venue announced Thursday that it's shutting its doors until it acquires the permits needed to evade city fines.

EAST WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN — Shea Stadium, a DIY concert hall in East Williamsburg, announced on Thursday that it closed its doors temporarily while it secures the permits required to legally operate in the city.

"After increasing pressure from the local authorities it's no longer sustainable for us to continue to operate the way we have over the past 8 years," the venue wrote in a Facebook post. "Though steps are being taken to acquire the necessary permits to secure both the short and long term future of Shea, it's become increasingly clear that we won't be able to keep having shows in the meantime."

The concert hall said the potential fines it would rack up for not having the necessary permits would be too expensive for it to make a profit for the foreseeable future.

It added that there will be more information in the next few days regarding when the concert hall predicts it will be able to reopen. The bands that were scheduled to play at Shea are being relocated to other venues.

Shea was shut down by the NYPD and FDNY in late January, but it opened again soon after.

It is unclear exactly which permits the owners of the venue were referring to in their post. Patch's request for comment to the owners wasn't immediately returned. We will update if we hear back.
