Tourist Who Beat Officer in Williamsburg Subway Scuffle Avoids Jail

The Morgan Avenue L stop was the scene of a confrontation when a tourist being detained believed an officer was really an imposter.

WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN — A man who police say beat a plainclothes transit officer whom he believed was an imposter last April will not serve any jail time in a plea deal reached Monday.

In connection with that incident, Alexander Telinde received three years of probation, the Brooklyn DA's office told to Patch. The deal did not include any time behind bars.

On April 12, 2016, Telinde, 21, and his girlfriend were approached by a transit officer after they were spotted allegedly jumping the turnstile at Williamsburg's Morgan Avenue L stop, the New York Post reported. Unconvinced of the validity of the approaching officer's badge, police said Telinde, a Virginia native, took the officer's baton and began hitting him with it.

After Telinde's girlfriend, Emily Weber, 20, joined the scuffle. The duo were eventually brought under control and charged with assaulting an officer, resisting arrest and obstruction, police told the Post.

Telinde eventually pleaded guilty to assault, according to DNAinfo, which added that felony charges were dropped against Weber, and she has pleaded guilty to attempted assault.
