Wanted: Brooklyn Trash-Can Artists

If you have a knack for painting oddly shaped objects, you may want to lend your skills to a community art project in Carroll Gardens.

CARROLL GARDENS, BROOKLYN — The Friends of Carroll Park (FOCP), a non-profit run by volunteers, is looking for local artists to spruce up a bunch of metal trash cans rusting in the historic park between Court and Smith streets, neighbor Katia Kelly reported on her blog Pardon Me For Asking.

The FOCP will supply the trash cans — but the rest falls on the artists. Past designs have included cats, birds and flowers.

In 2006, the then-new barrels were painted by local artists to give the park a little color. Ten years later, and the cans have finally succumbed to the elements. (Aka, they're rotting.) So FoCP is relaunching the project — hoping to inspire another awesome set of cans to dot the perimeter of Brooklyn’s third oldest park.

Interested parties are encouraged to email the FOCP at carrollparkbrooklyn@gmail.com. The organization is accepting sketches up to Saturday, March 26, and will let artists know whether their designs have been accepted by Wednesday, March 30.

There will be an unveiling ceremony on May 14, according to Kelly.
