WINDSOR TERRACE, BROOKLYN — Hinterlands Bar will now be slinging drinks, and sharing its unique decor, for four more hours per day, as first noted by KARMABrooklyn Blog.

The bar opened at 739 Church Ave. in June, a labor of love put together by Sharlene Frank Wellington, the owner of Prospect Height establishment Sharlene's Bar, her husband Stuart Wellington, who had worked at Commonweath Bar in Park Slope, and their partner Matthew Kuhn.

Hinterland's new hours are 1 p.m. to 4 a.m. seven days a week. It also has an outdoor seating area that's open until midnight.

Inside the bar on Monday, Stuart Wellington said his wife Sharlene grew up on Ocean Parkway. They both felt the area, despite its residential nature, lacked local bars, starting a two-year planning, design and permitting process that finally came to fruition this summer.

Hinterlands' eye-catching floral wallpaper came from a German company, Wellington said, while the bar itself was built out by a Brooklyn-based theater company, Deadalus Design and Production.

Wellington also explained that the wallpapering in the bathroom was his idea. Inside, images spill forth from fantasy books, including quite a few Dungeons and Dragons volumes from the 1980's and 1990's.

"I'm kind of a big nerd," Wellington explained, noting that he previously worked at the Warhammer Games Workshop. That said, he added with a smile that you definitely don't need to be a D&D fan to enjoy Hinterlands' atmosphere.

Wellington said that Hinterlands is in the process of adding a kitchen (they're waiting for their power to be upgraded) at which point they'll start selling hot and cold sandwiches, cheese and meat plates, and other small bites.

In the future, Wellington said he's looking forward to running board game nights and movie showings in the bar's backroom.

And in the meantime, you can stop in to enjoy Hinterlands' selection of drinks, including a beer menu that's consistently priced around $6 or $7.
