KENSINGTON, BROOKLYN — A Kensington resident is fed up with a hazardous intersection in the neighborhood where two family members have been struck by cars, and is now calling for street safety improvements there.

In a Change.org petition created Monday, lifelong Kensington resident Shera Shakiri writes that the "dangerous" corner of Beverley Road and East 2nd Street lacks a stop sign and a painted crosswalk.

"I have been reporting the dangerous corner of Beverley Road and E 2 Street for many years to the City," Shakiri wrote. "My mother was a pedestrian struck by a vehicle there in 2011 and my brother-in-law was a pedestrian struck there in 2017 requiring surgical procedure."

Shakiri fears that someone will be killed by a speeding driver on that corner, and is urging the Department of Transportation to add street-safety infrastructure there.

"Cars that drive down Beverley mostly speed on that curve and are going to result in a deadly accident one day (GOD FORBID)," the petitioner wrote. "I am going to start a petition for a stop sign and painted crosswalk as well as 2 speed bumps on that curve. THIS HAS URGENCY."

"I hope that all my fellow neighbors see this as a huge safety threat and help in me trying to obtain the attention of the CITY & DOT."

At least a few other concerned New Yorkers seem to agree with her assessment and recommendations.

"All of our Brooklyn streets need to be redesigned for safety to protect the people, pedestrians and bicyclists, and not give preferential treatment to drivers of several ton vehicles," wrote Deobrah Harden of why she signed the petition.

"This intersection is a death trap waiting to happen," wrote Lauren Ranzino.

The petition had been signed by 42 people as of this writing.

The Beverly Road intersection, notably, is just two blocks away from East 4th Street and Church Avenue, where on Saturday two pedestrians were struck by a car in a crash that killed a 60-year-old woman .

The DOT did not immediately provide comment.
