Kensington Block Named For Firefighter Killed On 9/11
East Third Street now bares the name of Michael Leopoldo Bocchino, an FDNY firefighter who lost his life on 9/11.
KENSINGTON, BROOKLYN — A Kensington block now bares the name of a local FDNY firefighter who lost his life in the line of duty on 9/11.
East Third Street between Caton Avenue and Albermarle Road was renamed Friday to honor Michael Leopoldo Bocchino, a Brooklyn firefighter who died responding to the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.
The Brooklyn firefighter served 22 years with the FDNY was assigned to Windsor Terrace's Engine Company 240, Battalion 48 on 1307 Prospect Ave., city records show.

Bocchino grew up on East Third Street and was living there with his family when he lost his life at the age of 45.
He was survived by his parents Michael and Lucy Bocchino, his sister, Debra Lavender, and his brother, Thomas Bocchino, according to a New York Times obituary.

"I have many fond memories of family and friends growing up on this block," his sister said at Friday's ceremony. "Renaming this street today in his honor, to Michael Bocchino, is another cherished memory."
