Kensington Man Gets 7 Years For Destroying Ex's Sofa: Queens DA

Keon Richmond slashed his ex's sofa, threw out her nightstands and left his knife next to a book called "Couples Therapy," the DA said.

KENSINGTON, BROOKLYN — A Kensington man awaiting sentencing for stalking and murdering his girlfriend will spend at least seven years behind bars for breaking into another ex-girlfriend's place and destroying her sofa, prosecutors said.

Keon Richmond, 37, was sentenced Wednesday after a Queens jury found him guilty of breaking into and trashing his ex's Jamaica apartment in October 2016, Acting District Attorney John Ryan announced.

“Not only did he destroy her apartment, but he called and threatened the young woman to further instill fear and violate her safety," Ryan said. "Given the crimes committed, the sentenced imposed by the Court today is just and more than warranted.”

Prosecutors said Richmond busted into his then-26-year-old girlfriend's 159th Street apartment on Oct. 18, slashed her couch, threw away her headboard and nightstands, broke her television sets and cut the plugs of her air conditioner and heater.

The Brooklyn man then dropped his knife on a coffee table next to a book called “Couples Therapy” and left, prosecutors said.

Richmond further terrified his ex by calling her the next day and telling her, “If I get arrested, you, your mom and your daughter better pray,” according to prosecutors.

This occurred weeks before Richmond hunted down and murdered correction Officer Alastasia Bryan, 25, as she sat in her car in the Bergen Beach on Dec. 4, 2016, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney's office.

Richmond was convicted of murdering Bryan in Brooklyn Criminal Court on Oct. 21, prosecutors said, and awaits sentencing.
